**Hairy Tongue**

Hairy tongue is a temporary, harmless condition characterized by a black or brownish discoloration and a furry appearance on the surface of the tongue. It occurs when the tiny projections on the tongue, called papillae, become elongated and trap bacteria, food particles, or other substances. Common causes include poor oral hygiene, smoking, certain medications, and excessive use of mouthwashes. Although it may look unusual, hairy tongue is generally painless and can be treated with improved oral care and lifestyle changes.
