**filiform papillae**

Filiform papillae are the most numerous type of papillae found on the surface of the tongue. They are slender, thread-like projections that cover the anterior two-thirds of the tongue and play a key role in the texture and sensation of the tongue’s surface. Unlike other papillae, filiform papillae do not contain taste buds but are important for mechanical functions such as helping to grip food and cleanse the mouth. Their unique structure contributes to the tongue’s rough texture and aids in speech and food manipulation.
